Pole Dance/Fitness -
Three types of Pole Dancing
(Fitness, Exotic, Empowering)
In efforts to not offend, pole is also called Vertical Dance or Vertical Fitness.
It is thought that may pole dancing was originally a pagan fertility dance dating
back to the 12th century. Pole dancing originated in the 1920s, when traveling
fairs would offer tent sideshows. Women would dance suggestively on a small
stage in front of cheering crowds. Because of the size of the tent, the tent pole
was at the edge of the stage. Dancers began dancing with the pole, and it became known as a dance pole.
Pole dancing became available in bars as burlesque grew in the 1950s. Artistic pole dancing (chinese pole) is used in cabaret/circus and stage performance in a non-erotic environment. The earliest recorded pole dance was in 1968 with a performance by Belle Jangles at Mugwump strip joint in Oregon. In the 1980s, pole dancing became popular in strip clubs in Canada and later in the U.S. A Canadian woman named Fawnia Mondey began teaching Pole Dancing to women as a form of exercise in 1990. She made the first instructional pole fitness DVD.
Pole Fitness was already widely popular in England, Canada, and Australia before it finally became popular here. Sheila Kelley is an actress, writer, and producer who helped to spread the popularity of Pole Fitness across the United States
as an empowering new workout. It is now being recognized by many as a valid form of dance. Pole dancing uses upper body and core strength, along with working most major muscle groups in the body. It combines many styles of dance and fitness together, and shows incredible beauty and strength. Pole Dance or Fitness studios for women have opened up all over the United States at a fast rate. Many large cities have several pole studios.
The International Pole Federation is a unique world-class federation, governed by the world’s leading pole dancers. The US Pole Federation hosted the first pole dance championship competition from New York City in 2009. Many other countries have held competitions for several years. There currently is a move
to have pole dancing as a trial sport in the 2016 Olympics. During the Winter Olympics 2010, there have been many news stories and public discussions regarding this possibility.

Burlesque "The art of the Tease"
Was originally a form of theatrical and musical parody as early as the
16th Century. The striptease originated at the Moulin Rouge in 1890s
Paris, but burlesque is closely associated with the strip tease in American
culture only. American burlesque has it's origins in music hall performances
and vaudeville. Burlesque was first seen in America by Lydia Thompson
and her British Blondes, in the late 1800s. She came here from England
and her group performed their own brand of burlesque, mocking currently
popular plays.
Burlesque has become a blend of satire, performance art, and adult
entertainment. These adult revue shows often use themes, characters, or
gimmicks. Elaborate costumes and sets are used with lighting and music to
enhance the impact of the performance. Burlesque means "in an upside
down style." Burlesque enjoyed it's heyday during the late 1930s through
the early 1960s.
The current revival of burlesque was pioneered independently in the mid
1990s by Billie Madley's "Cinema" and Ami Goodheart's “Dutch Weismann's Follies” revues in New York, Michelle Carr's “The Velvet Hammer Burlesque” troupe in
Los Angeles, and The Shim-Shamettes in New Orleans. Many individual
performers were incorporating aspects of burlesque in their acts as well. These productions, inspired by the likes of Sally Rand, Tempest Storm, Gypsy Rose Lee,
and Lili St. Cyr, have inspired a new generation of performers. Today, New
Burlesque has taken many forms, but all have the common trait of honoring
one or more of burlesque's previous incarnations. Acts include striptease,
expensive costumes, bawdy humor, cabaret, and more. Look for the new movie, titled "Burlesque" with Christina Aguilera, Cher, and more. The movie released in
November, 2010.
Bollywood
Is the informal term for the Mumbai-based Hindi language film industry in India.
The name combines Bombay and Hollywood. Unlike Hollywood, Bollywood does
not exist as a real physical place. The Hindi film industry makes more films than anywhere else in the world. These films incorporate musical numbers.
The Bollywood dance style may incorporate a fusion of East Indian cassical, hip hop, jazz, salsa, folk-bhangra, arabic, and Oriental dancing. Numerous Bollywood
films have been shot in the U.S. since the mid 1990s. In 2001, bhangra became
known in the U.S. by the popular music. Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, and Pras each released bhangra influenced songs. This became an inspiration for the dance and fitness
classes that have become popular.
